Firefighters strike, 1977

From November 1977- January 1978, the Fire Brigades Union held its first ever national strike for a 30% pay increase or £20 per week on the qualified firefighter's rate. Troops were brought in to provide emergency cover. The strike was eventually settled for a 10% increase, within the Labour Government's incomes policy guidelines, taking the average wage to just over £4000. This photo shows the White Watch picket line at Shoreditch Fire Station, London.
