International Socialist and Workers Congress, Zurich, 1893

This Congress of the Second International was held in the Zurich Tonhalle, a concert hall on the Alpen Quai 6-12 August 1893. There were 65 British delegates, the majority from trade union organisations, including 4 from the TUC Parliamentary Committee. This photograph shows the Social Democratic Federation and other British delegates posed in front of the portrait of Karl Marx, painted by Margaret Greulich, which surrounded by red flags hung above the platform.
