War Service for Women, 1915

In March 1915, the government launched a national scheme for the registration of women who wanted paid work.

In July 1914, 3,276,000 women were classed as employed (this did not include small workplaces, domestic service and other groups). By April 1918, this had risen to 4,808,000.
