Angelica Balabanoff 1878-1965

Signed photo addressed to Margaret Bondfield from Anzhelika Balabanova: ‘To dear comrade M. Bondfield. Bern 1915 - Moscow 1920. Remember how sad things looked then, how bright and hopeful they are now in our free proletarian Russia - cradle of universal socialism.’

Balabanoff was an Italian communist of Russian origin. After the 1917 Revolution, she returned to Russia and became secretary of the Communist Third International in 1919. She later became critical of Bolshevik politics and returned to Italy in 1922 and was involved in social democratic politics. The inscription on the photograph refers to her meeting Margaret Bondfield at the Conference of Socialist Women in Bern in March 1915. This photograph is part of a collection deposited by Margaret Bondfield following her trip to Russia in 1920 as part of a British Labour delegation
