October 1917 anniversary celebrations in Red Square, Moscow, 1924

This photo was brought back by the TUC Delegation to the Soviet Union, 1924. The TUC delegation visited Russia, Ukraine the Caucasus and other areas of the Soviet Union between November-December 1924.

Main banner says “CHINA” with the word “Imperialism” coiled snakelike underneath. Banner to the right has Chinese comic figure with “tea” on his head with the slogan “Keep your hands off China.” Small banner mid left to the rear of marchers says “oppressed peoples of the world unite.”

[Note: In 1921 the Soviet Union began supporting the Kuomintang (KMT) or Chinese Nationalist party, originally a revolutionary movement working for the overthrow of the Chinese monarchy. The National Party owed its early successes largely to Soviet aid and advice.]
