A number of local authorities established communal feeding centres from 1940 onwards. A national network of British Restaurants was established in 1941 and these were renamed Civic Restaurants in 1946. This photograph shows a 'Citizens Kitchen' in Mitcham, Surrey, and comes from a Ministry of Food pamphlet on food rationing.
