TUC carthorse, David Low cartoon, 1950

TUC political cartoonist David Low (1891-1963) often depicted the TUC as a strong but stubborn horse. In this cartoon from July 1950 in the 'Daily Herald', where Low worked 1950-1953, the TUC carthorse is resisting the efforts of disruptive elements in industry to force it into the knackers' yard van.

This is presumably a reference to the TUC campaign against the influence of the Communist Party.
