Young miners, 1947

In 1946-47, Britain experienced the worst winter since 1880 and the effects of the cold were heightened by fuel shortages. The drop in production was mainly due to a failure to recruit and retain miners in the industry, although additional manpower was recruited from Ireland and Poland. The June 1947 issue of Challenge, published by the Young Communist League, suggests that better social and sports facilities in the coalmining districts might encourage young men to work in mining.
