In May 1940, Oswald Mosley and other leaders of the British Union of Fascists were imprisoned and the BUF disbanded. The government's decision to release him in September 1943, on the grounds that he was ill, was opposed by the TUC, the Communist Party, trade union branches, and a majority of Labour MPs. One million people signed a petition of protest. These photographs, showing demonstrations in Trafalgar Square and Westminster, are from 'It can happen again' published by Senior Press in 1946, when former supporters of the British Union of Fascists were attempting to re-organise.
