In 1980, the TUC decided to support and extend the work of centres for the unemployed that had been established by unions, local authorities and the Manpower Services Commission. By 1983, a network of over 200 Centres, organised through the TUC Regional Councils were offering information and advice, access to training and education classes. Improvements in unemployment levels and problems in funding have caused many Centres to close, but in 2002 there were still over 70 open across the country.
