In the post war period, Britain faced a housing crisis due to the loss or damage to millions of homes plus a shortage of building materials. At the same time, many government - requisitioned buildings were now standing empty. In a campaign, supported by the Communist Party, many homeless families moved in to occupy empty mansion blocks, hotels and camps. This photo shows some of the 200 families who occupied the Duchess of Bedford House, a block of luxury flats in Kensington, London in September 1946.
