War refugees at work, 1941

Following the fall of France, refugees from Europe began to arrive in large numbers. In May 1941, special employment exchanges were opened in London to register foreign nationals for employment and training. Later in 1941, 'enemy' aliens from Germany, Austria and Italy were also required to register and 37,000 [mainly women] did so. This article, entitled 'Industry's Foreign Legion', appeared in the Ministry of Labour and National Service Engineering Bulletin, December 1941.
