Outworkers, 1942-1945

As the war progressed and labour shortages worsened, many firms established homeworking and outworking schemes, which attracted women part-time workers in particular. Shops and other non-essential workplaces were taken over to provide accommodation for outworkers in defence equipment production. This photograph shows older, refugee and women outworkers, together with British Broadcasting Corporation staff, doing essential work for Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd.
