Monica Henderson was born in Stepney in 1937. She entered clothes manufacturing, also known as the "rag trade", as a machinist after leaving school. She worked in the Eastend with many of the other local women in the rag trade. She explains why she entered the rag trade and didn't get an office job, because she felt she didn't have the appropriate education. She dscribes the working conditions, hours, and holidays. She talks about moving to an office job as a filing clerk in Finsbury Square. She describes working from home when her mother was ill.
