200 women workers involved in silk screen printing at the GEC Spon Street Works in Coventry, earning a basic £13 per week, came out on strike when the introduction of new materials lowered their piece rates. There were attempts to break through the picket line and a picket was knocked over by a vehicle. Although the women were members of the Amalgamated Union of Engineering Workers, they received little initial support from the plant convenor, due to fears of widespread layoffs and factory closure . They were supported by the AUEW District Committee and finally accepted a management offer in February 1974.
