John was born in 1935 and left school at 16 to work for in a bank at Earl's Court in London. He rose up to be a manager and describes the office protocols of bank work and the very traditional world of banking with rigid gender demarcation. He describes bank security in these years and the threat of robberies. He notes the role of racism and anti- racism. He describes the key role played by the trade unions in west London after WW2, particularly on the Great West Road and art Park Royal.

He joined BIFU and became a branch representative and organised a strike over opening hours and describes unions in the 1970s.

In his clip he describes his motives for entering banking.
